Edinburgh International Festival 2012 unveils line-up...

A Polish version of Macbeth and an adaptation of My Fair Lady will be among the shows featured at this year's Edinburgh International Festival.

The programme, which was unveiled on Wednesday, will involve performances by almost 3,000 artists from 47 nations.

Violinist Nicola Benedetti will make her first appearance at the festival.

The cultural extravaganza coincides with the London Olympics, and it is hoped this will lead to increased attendances.

Sport will also make its mark at the event, with thousands of runners in luminous suits bringing Arthur's Seat to life each night for the NVA's Speed Of Light art installation.

In the days following the 2012 Olympics, the first International Culture Summit will take place at the Scottish Parliament, in partnership with the Scottish and UK governments and the British Council.

Organisers said it would provide a platform for culture ministers from around the world to hold discussions on the role of culture in international dialogue.

The festival, which runs from 9 August to 2 September, will include performances of dance, opera, music and theatre.

The Royal Highland Centre's Lowland Hall is to be converted into a theatre space to house three productions which "can't be staged in conventional theatres".

These will include a Polish version of Shakespeare's Macbeth by Grzegorz Jarzyna, set in the Middle East.

At the same venue, Swiss director Christoph Marthaler will make a rare appearance in the UK with an off-the-wall adaptation of My Fair Lady based in a language lab.

A new production of Gulliver's Travels will also premiere at the this year's event. It will be produced in collaboration with Irish musician and composer Shaun Davey.

Nicola Benedetti will join the London Symphony Orchestra at the Usher Hall as they perform the complete Szymanowski and Brahms symphonies.

Other highlights include morning music sessions at the Queen's Hall, as well as four performances of Prokofiev's Cinderella by the Mariinsky Ballet and orchestra.

On the final night, more than 100,000 fireworks will be set off, choreographed to music, in the annual display.
