Review: Candidate – Psychic Dissonance From The Unself

Candidate – Psychic Dissonance From The Unself (Independent)
Having coined their own genre definition, “dreamrock”, which purports to combine elements of ‘60s psych-pop, post-punk, ‘90s post-hardcore and indie rock - it just about sums them up. Their second album, “Psychic Dissonance From The Unself” has been mixed by Justin Craig (producer of Vandaveer, MGMT) and its often arena-scaled melodies and built-in power chords recall both U2 and Manic Street Preachers.

Dissonant it is not but it revels in the brighter side of rock with occasional flurries of prog and horns (“NYC”) and the tunes are perhaps a little too breezy to accompany titles such as “Untimely End”. Nonetheless there are some great moments as when “April Again” sets Beatles Revolver-era, woozily affected vocals against a Smashing Pumpkins-like backdrop and “Brutal” sees Lloyd Cole gazing shoeward!
