Review: Papir
Papir – Stundum (El Paraiso Records)
Papir are a semi-improvisational, psychedelic rock trio from Denmark.
Their territory is one of extended slowly unfolding instrumentals where Christian Becher Clausen’s repetitive bass grooves, Nicklas Sørensens’ psych guitar as well as their improvised sonic washes, surround the complex drumming of Christoffer Brøchmanns.
Drawing on jazz, Krautrock and other eclectic rock forms, their palette is broad, with tranquility (“Tuesday #2”) on the one hand, while the other convincingly fuzzes (sections of “Tuesday #1”).
It is however the marginally longer cornerstone, “Monday” - which takes up the entire second side of the vinyl release - that clearly defines their sound. It gradually rises, smoothly falls, cools itself and separates in a watery mid-stream, before injecting itself with prog.
