Gary Eisenbraun - Just An Emotion (Vision Childe)
Originally from Rochester, NY, but now based in Tampa Bay, Fl, Gary Eisenbraun relocated to the Sunshine State because he felt his music boasted a Southern feel, and when his influences are considered – Black Crowes, Allman Brothers, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Otis Redding, etc. – it’s difficult to argue otherwise. Indeed, a quick spin through “Just An Emotion” reveals a songwriter fully engaged with the rock and soul traditions of the South, whether it’s laying down a ragged, greasy groove or finding inspiration in the gospel soaked soul of Muscle Shoals. Hugely prolific, his website is chock full of free downloadable music, and recently crashed because of excessive traffic. Eisenbraun has already recorded (and made available) a companion album to this one, a further 16 tracks to compliment the 15 here.

“Just An Emotion” is a collection of favourite tracks that have been written over the past ten years. Some have already appeared on earlier releases, and some have never previously seen the light of day, though all have been freshly recorded for this project. Highlights appear regularly. Beginning with the title song, a slow burn, full-on rock ballad, with Eisenbraun tearing the words out from somewhere deep inside. It may not be wholly representative of the album, but makes for a heavyweight opening. “Always Been a Rolling Stone” is just as substantial but rattles the bones in a more visceral, primitive way – very cool guitar, too. “Sometimes You Win, Sometimes You Lose” doesn’t hit quite so hard, but is equally distinctive, and would sound wonderful on the radio. Perhaps my favourite is “Back Where You Belong”. Its lolloping rhythm and exceptional lead guitar breaks are just breathtaking.
