Adele overtakes Amy Winehouse album chart record

Adele's 21 has become the UK's biggest-selling album of the 21st century, overtaking Amy Winehouse's Back To Black.

The Official Charts Company said 21 had sold 3.4 million copies since it was released in January, compared to 3.3 million for Back To Black.

The album been in the top 10 for 45 weeks, including 18 at number one.

Adele's success is not just restricted to the UK. 21 has been the biggest-selling album in the world this year.

Last week, Adele earned six Grammy nominations - including album of the year, record of the year and best pop vocal album.

The singer has also revealed that she's started speaking again following throat surgery in the US last month.

Writing on her official blog she reacted to her Grammy nominations.

"A couple days after finally being able to talk again I'm pretty speechless," she wrote.

"This has been the best year as it is but to end 2011 with this incredible achievement and honour is beyond anything I can express.

"I made the record and you've made it what it's become."
