Review: Marian Call

Marian Call - Something Fierce (Independent)
Completely funded by her fans, Marian Call’s third album is a super collection of well-produced jazz-folk-pop vignettes, dealing with all sorts of subjects, approached in all sorts of ways. Apart, obviously, from hearing where the money was spent, those who invest in the physical product (a horrible word, when talking about any form of art) will find themselves in possession of a properly packaged double-disc set, with a 16 page booklet of lyrics and exclusive photos. When most artists and labels, especially independents, are looking to downsize and go the purely digital route, it’s refreshing to come across an artist prepared to push the boat out and compete with the majors - on her own terms, of course.

Over two discs and 19 songs, Call does her thing, which she’s helpfully named “eclectic acoustic folky bebop”. Its mix of idiosyncratic songs and quirky time signatures is certain to raise the occasional smile, though don’t be surprised by the intermittent poignancy. The collection begins with “Good Morning Moon” and it’s a joyous, upbeat launch, which gets even better when the choir of backing vocalists playfully join in. “The Avocado Song” is mostly just Call and a fiercely strummed guitar and harmonica, and is witty, and lyrically precise. “Dear Mister Darcy” is obviously inspired by Jane Austen, and she can be added to a list of topics that includes space shuttle missions, cancer scares, divorce, driving in Alaska and SxSW. I hope “Something Fierce” gets the audience it deserves, and if you’re partial to the records of Rickie Lee Jones, Edie Brickell or even Michelle Shocked, then you should head over to Call’s website where you can hear the whole album before you inevitably purchase.
