PUBLIC IMAGE LTD TO REISSUE ALBUMS...

PUBLIC IMAGE LTD TO REISSUE ALBUMS
Public Image Ltd are set to reissue most of their back catalogue next year, and have also announced plans to release a brand new LP.

The reissued set, which will include two live albums, though not their 1979 studio set 'Metal Box', is expected to be released via EMI next year.

Speaking to BBC 6music about the band's ninth album, which they've been working on since reforming in 2009, PiL leader John Lydon said: "It is probably going to be called 'This Is PiL', basically because it is, it is all the work, effort and energy we put into this record".

BJÖRK RELEASES STANDALONE APP FOR CHRISTMAS...

BJÖRK RELEASES STANDALONE APP FOR CHRISTMAS
Björk has released a standalone version of the app for her track 'Solstice', which is also available within her larger 'Biophilia' app, released alongside the album of the same name and available for Apple devices.

'Solstice' was inspired by a Christmas poem by Icelandic author Sjón, which was written as a celebration of light and seasons, and compares the solar system to a Christmas tree. Like you do. The app takes this as its inspiration too, with a sun at its centre and rays of light manipulated by the user acting as harp strings plucked by circling planets. Which all sounds very nice, though the noise I just made with it wasn't so much.

Presuming you make a sound that's a bit nicer with the app, and then want to share it with people, music created in the standalone version of the app can be sent as a Christmas e-card. Download it here: www.itunes.com/apps/biophilia

Orson Welles' Citizen Kane Oscar auctioned in US...

The Oscar won by Orson Welles for writing the groundbreaking 1941 film Citizen Kane has sold at auction in California for $861,542 (£549,721).

Welles wrote, directed and starred in the film, regarded by many as one of the greatest films of all time.

It was nominated for nine Academy Awards but won in only one category - best original screenplay.

The statuette was once thought lost but resurfaced in 1994 when a US man tried to sell it.

Cinematographer Gary Graver claimed Welles had given it to him as a form of payment.

Numerous legal battles ensued before Welles's won back the rights of ownership.

The identity of the bidder who won it at an internet auction has not been revealed. But the auction house said the second-highest offer came from magician David Copperfield.

As well as the Oscar for Citizen Kane, Welles also won an Academy Honorary Award for his "superlative and distinguished service" in the industry in 1970.

Academy Awards very rarely come up for sale. Since 1950, the academy has required Oscar winners to sign an agreement that they will never sell their statuette.

But some high-profile sales have taken place before. In 1999, singer Michael Jackson paid $1.54m for the Oscar given to David O Selznick for producing Gone With The Wind.

David Bowie 'lost' footage to be broadcast on TV...

A rare David Bowie Top of the Pops performance will be shown on television for the first time since it was originally broadcast in 1973.

It was believed that every recording of the singer's performing number two hit "The Jean Genie" had been destroyed.

It emerged last week that one had been found - and it will feature in a Top of The Pops Christmas Special on BBC 2.

The footage was found when retired TV cameraman John Henshall realised he had his own copy of the performance.

The film emerged earlier this month when it was shown at the Missing Believed Wiped event at the British Film Institute in London which celebrates the discovery of long-lost TV shows.

Mr Henshall, from Oxfordshire, worked on the show and kept a copy of Bowie's appearance.

The four-minute clip of Bowie performing alongside his then-band The Spiders From Mars will be screened in full on the Top of The Pops special.

Tapes wiped

The performance has not been screened on TV since it originally aired on 4 January 1973, the day after it was recorded.

It was lost when hundreds of shows were wiped to allow video tape to be reused by the BBC, because of its high cost.

Mr Henshall was unaware until recently that the BBC had not kept a copy.

"I just couldn't believe that I was the only one with it. I just thought you wouldn't be mad enough to wipe a tape like that," he said earlier this month.

Mark Cooper, executive producer of Top Of The Pops 2, said: "Bowie singing The Jean Genie is electric and the kind of piece of archive that not only brings back how brilliant Top Of The Pops could be, but also how a piece of archive can speak to us down the years.

"I can't imagine what other piece of TOTP from the early Seventies would be as extraordinary a find."

BBC Two's 90-minute Top of the Pops Christmas Special will be screened at 19:30 GMT on Wednesday.

Review: Peter Pan On Ice at De Montfort Hall, Leicester...

Peter Pan On Ice at De Montfort Hall, Leicester.
Is there anyone out there unaware of the Peter Pan story? Through J.M. Barrie’s original play, which was soon expanded into a novel, various films, most famously Walt Disney’s classic 1953 adaptation, the story of Wendy, Tinkerbell, the boy who wouldn’t grow up and their adventures in Neverland is indelibly embedded in the nation’s psyche. Which makes it ideal for interpretation in various different ways. De Montfort Hall’s production places a rink on stage and with the minimum of spoken narrative allows the story to be told almost solely through the medium of ice dance.

It’s by no means a large performance space, but the Russian troupe coped admirably with its limitations, with up to a dozen skaters on stage at any one time. There were infrequent tumbles, and let’s be honest, the occasional wipeout adds considerably to the excitement, especially in the front row, but on the whole the levels of skills on display were remarkably high. Hours spent watching Torvill and Dean means we’re all armchair experts when it comes to the moves and leaps, and there were plenty of Salchow Jumps, Haircutters and Death Spirals to satisfy the fans.

The audience spanned the age groups, ranging from 8 to 80, and it wasn’t unusual to see three generations of a family take their places. All seemed to enjoy themselves, and I don’t think I’ve ever seen a show at De Montfort where not a single audience member has left their seat during an entire show.

This production runs until the 31st January; so there’s still plenty of time add a little magic dust to the Christmas celebrations.

The Proper Records Best Of 2011:

Nick Lowe - The Old Magic
"I'm sixty-one years old now, Lord I never thought I'd see 30". The line cuts right to the quick. For though he spent his 20s "busy not fitting into three successive movements: pub rock, punk and new wave", Nick Lowe has mined fertile new creative ground in recent years and the eleven tracks on 'The Old Magic' dig deeper still.
"Master songwriter comes up lucky with LP number 13" ****(4 Stars) - Q magazine
"Like a fine Nick Lowe continues to mature as a songwriter whilst others are withering on the vine" ****(4 Stars) - The Independant

Diana Jones - High Atmosphere
"High Atmosphere", the latest album in the remarkable career arc of singer-songwriter Diana Jones, hits with the force of a revelation, further deepening an unprecedented body of work that began in 2006. The Nashville singer-songwriter brings the mountain ballad tradition into the present day.

Red Sky July are Charity Hair (The Alice Band), Shelly Poole (Alisha's Attic) and Ally McErlaine (Texas) - three successful musician/writers united in a love of folk, country, vintage music and vintage clothes. The achingly beautiful songs on their debut album range from otherworldly modern folk to bluegrass stompalongs always informed by a wonderful pop sensibility.
"As atmospheric as it is emotional" ****(4 Stars) - Q Magazine

Tom Russell - Mesabi
A thread runs through Tom Russell's songs, a zigzagging but determinedly solid line that connects the perilous bordertown of Juarez, Mexico to the real and faux glitz of L.A. and the bleak iron range of Minnesota—the Mesabi of the album's title.
"..songs so potent they could hit a vein in a long dead corpse" Album Of The Week - The Independant
"The great US songsmith assisted by Lucinda Williams and Calexico..an epic study of sand and celluloid"
****(4 Stars) - Uncut

Jimmie Vaughan - Plays More Blues, Ballads & Favorites
For Jimmie Vaughan, too much of a good thing is a concept that simply doesn't exist. The follow up to his 2010 album "Blues, Ballads and Favorites" is packed with 16 covers of classic tunes that are close to his heart. Also returning for round two, to assist with the vocals, is Lou Ann Barton, whose powerful pipes grace several tunes on the new release.
"...great rock 'n' roll vocals...you are also treated to some great guitar solos from this quality guitarist" ****(4 Stars) - Maverick

The Waterboys - An Appointment With Mr Yeats
'An Appointment with Mr Yeats' sees the words of W B Yeats, one of Ireland's greatest literary sons, merged with the music of The Waterboys, one of Britain and Ireland's greatest rock bands, in a truly unique and ambitious musical undertaking.
"An Appointment with Mr. Yeats is a unique and memorable opportunity for lovers of great music and great literature to celebrate the union of song and word in one spectacular record."
**** (4 Stars) - Mojo

Review: Jay & Germain - Pinball Summer (OST)

Jay & Germain - Pinball Summer (OST) (Chapeau)
“Pinball Summer” (aka “Pick-Up Summer”) was a 1980 coming-of-age teen flick which centred around a couple of buddies, Greg and Steve, spending their summer vacation getting into various scrapes, and chasing two sisters, the delectable Donna and Suzy. As you can imagine, it’s aimed squarely at a certain audience who enjoy those sorts of hi-jinx, and the movie probably does everything necessary to deserve its decidedly average 4.1 rating on IMDb.

Fortunately, I’m not here to review the film. Clocking in at just over 30 minutes, Jay Boivin and Germain Gauthier’s soundtrack is a far more attractive proposition. Taking their inspiration from ‘60s surf music (in particular Brian Wilson’s Beach Boys), pre-Beatles rock ‘n’ roll, Pete Townsend’s chord progressions and Steely Dan’s way with an arrangement, its eight tracks provide lush harmonies, killer tunes and plentiful sweet hooks.

Needless to say, it’s many delights will only appeal to a limited audience, but if like me you miss proper hand-crafted pop music, I can only advise immediate satisfaction. There’s absolutely nothing here that could be described as filler, and if it has one fault, it’s over a little too quickly. Never mind, I can always start again.

Review: Cesare Carugi

Cesare Carugi - Here’s To The Road (Roots Music Club)
Cesare Carugi is a singer-songwriter, born and raised in Italy, though heavily influenced by American artists such as Springsteen, Dylan, Tom Petty and Steve Earle. It works because he sings his songs in English with a rootsy, country voice and his band sound like they earned their musical spurs traversing the Texas chitlin’ circuit. I imagine American musicians aren’t easy to find in Italy, though Chicago singer-songwriter Michael McDermott is almost resident, and turns up on “Here’s To The Road” to duet with Carugi on one song.

I imagine it’s a stamp of approval that is most welcome for an artist making music so far from the source of his inspiration. It’s well deserved. Songs like the opening track “Too Late to Leave Montgomery” indicate an artist fully in tune with the concepts that underpin much American music: the roads that stretch forever and the local radio stations that provide the soundtrack. The artists that have influenced Carugi are the masters of his chosen genre, and he’s learnt well. “Caroline” builds the tension beautifully before the chorus allows some kind of relief and “Dakota Lights & The Man Who Shot John Lennon”, a piano steeped slower number, shows a wholly different face to Carugi’s American dream.

BLUR TO PERFORM AT 2012 BRITS
Alex James has been talking some more about the possibility of more Blur reunion shows, following confirmation the band will regroup next year to collect their Outstanding Contribution To Music gong at the BRIT Awards.

James told The Sun's Gordon Smart on his Xfm show that the band have met up to discuss the accolade, saying: "We're all very pleased. I saw the guys this week, we had a Christmas cuppa".

He continued: "We all remembered how much we loved being a band. I had always said in interviews I didn't miss being in a band, but that reminded me that I did".

Asked if Blur would schedule any more performances beyond the BRITs appearance, he said: "I wish I could tell you more. I'm sure it will happen one day but I don't know when. It's quite nice to keep it special".

Glastonbury founder Michael Eavis to be honoured...

Glastonbury founder Michael Eavis is to be presented with a lifetime achievement prize at the European Festival Awards in the Netherlands next month.

The arts and music festival has been held on his Somerset farm since 1970.

"After 41 years, to win something of this magnitude is something to be incredibly proud of," said the 76-year-old.

Eavis was made a CBE in the Queen's 2007 birthday honours list.

Michael Eavis gave up an early career in the merchant navy to take over the family farm in 1958.

Inspired by the Bath Festival of Blues in 1969, he hosted a small event the following year at Worthy Farm which, in the subsequent five decades, has become one of the biggest arts events in the global calendar.

"Glastonbury is the grandfather of the incredible festival market which Europe enjoys," said James Drury, managing director of the Festival Awards.

"Michael is cited as an inspiration by almost every festival organiser I speak to across the world. This is why he is so deserving of this honour."

This year's festival saw Coldplay, U2 and Beyonce headline Glastonbury's famous Pyramid stage.

Next year is a "fallow year" which will allow Worthy Farm to recover from the strains of hosting 170,000 people in June.

Eavis will receive his honour at ceremony in Groningen, The Netherlands, on 11 January.

Review: Stuart D'Rozario

Stuart D’Rozario – The Radio In My Head (Independent)
“The Radio In My Head” is Stuart D’Rozario’s third album. Over the years, the Minneapolis singer-songwriter has become something of a specialist in the art of marrying pristine pop hooks with an easygoing, unhurried vibe. Earlier outings have earned comparisons to Billy Joel and John Mellencamp, and they’re not far off, but I’d like to add Gary Louris’ Jayhawks and Ric Ocasek’s Cars to the list, together with folk-pop pioneers like Gerry Rafferty and at a pinch, the much-maligned Gilbert O’Sullivan.

Now, the latter pair may not be the hippest names to drop, but both of them were skilled songwriters with an ear for a tune. So it is with D’Rozario. I don’t expect to see him on the cover of NME anytime soon, but that takes nothing away from the inherent quality of his records. “The Radio In My Head” begins with the excellent title track. I can’t help but think of pop punk deities like Elvis Costello and the Buzzcocks, though the production and presentation is altogether gentler, but without sacrificing either hooks or thrills. “Never Enough” is pure old school power pop, beautifully played by D’Rozario’s band and could’ve been a huge hit in 1979. The nostalgic “The Girl Who Hid Everything Inside” is a perfect example of D’Rozario’s softer side. Plaintive and a little mournful, it still comes with a tune that’s going to have to be surgically removed.

Review: Ryan Scarberry

Ryan Scarberry - The House You Grew Up In (Independent)
There’s no shortage of singer-songwriters in the world, which is no bad thing, but it’s not easy carving out a sound and style that sets you apart from the pack, and not many succeed. Ryan Scarberry is one of the few. I can spot lots of influences, from Paul Simon to Rod Picott, but nothing that overwhelms, and his songs have the knack of gently taking the listener by the scruff of the neck and not letting go. Foremost, he considers himself a storyteller, and he does spin a good yarn, but he does so with a voice that’s simultaneously easy and quite distinctive, and he doesn’t forget to pack tunes.

“The House You Grew Up In” begins with “While You Were Waiting”. It’s pleasant enough, but never seems to really get going. Perhaps its pleasures are too abstract, especially as it fades directly into “Good Day”, with its ingrained melodiousness, sublime backing vocals and instant hook. Backing vocalist Janelle Houston gets more to do on “While You Were Waiting”, including the opening lines. It’s a fine track, which gets even better when they sing together. Perhaps my favourite is “Riverboat”. Here Amy Corbett joins Scarberry on viola, and with its themes of loss and treasured memories, it might have been too weighted towards melancholy, but instead and it’s uplifting and altogether heartening.
